Saturday 15th February

It’s Saturday, and for the second weekend in a row the weather is playing havoc with the racing. Wincanton has already been called off, and the ground at Ascot and Haydock will take some getting today. I have found 5 horses that I like the chances of today, and all 5 should be fine on the ground today.

Here are today’s racing selections, good luck!

ASCOT

Sam Brown (1.50) @ 9/4

Trainer Anthony Honeyball has always thought quite a bit of this 8 year old, and he has shown why on his return from a 2 year absence by winning his last 2 – I gave him as a winning selection on this blog LTO – and i fancy him to complete the hat trick here.

His jumping has been sound since he has been sent chasing, and he is at his best on soft or heavy ground. That means that today’s ground will be ideal for him, and as I’ve stated on this blog before, I’m not the biggest fan of Pym. Copperhead is a bigger threat in my opinion.

Eden De Houx (3.00) @ 9/2

David Pipe rates this 6 year old gelding highly, and he won both his bumpers for his new yard having won his Irish PTP on heavy ground. He battled well LTO to get off the mark over hurdles at Chepstow – again on heavy ground – over 2m, and the slight step up in trip to 2m 3f here should suit given the way he stayed on that day.

Trainer David Pipe has always rated Eden De Houx (above) highly, and I think the 6 year old can follow up his hurdling win LTO today

A lot of the opposition today have more to prove than this gelding in my opinion. If this gelding is as good as his trainer believes, he should take this race today on the way to better things.

Easyrun De Vassy (4.10) @ 17/2

Trainer Paul Nicholls has his yard in flying form at the moment, and this gelding was badly hampered turning in (clipped heels) LTO here over 2m 7f, and it cost him his chance, He looked certain to be heavily involved in the finish that day, and given more luck in running today, he should be heavily involved in the finish today.

I have always been a big fan of jockey Harry Cobden, and he is onboard this gelding again today which is a big positive in my opinion. This 6 year old represents good value here.

Pure Bliss (4.45) @ 10/3

Harry Fry paid €100,000 for this flat bred mare after she won her only Irish PTP, and she showed why when she won on her bumper debut for her new connections over 2m on soft ground at Ffos Las. This bumper is a slight rise in class, but she can handle it fine.

There are some other unexposed mares in this race which could be useful as well, but at the prices, I’m happy to back her trainer’s opinion of her at a good price. The stable’s number 1 jockey Sean Bowen is onboard which is another positive.

HAYDOCK

Yala Enki (3.15) @ 7/2

This 10 year old had a good record when trained by Venetia Williams, and he has since been transferred to Paul Nicholls. He got off the mark for his new trainer at the 3rd time of asking LTO when winning in taking style at Taunton under today’s jockey Bryony Frost.

He is a dour stayer who likes soft or testing ground, so today’s race looks ideal for him. As stated above, the yard are in flying form, and this admirable gelding has a good chance of giving the yard another winner today.

1 of my “10 To Follow For The Jumps Season 19/20” Overthetop runs today at Haydock (4.25). This horse struggled when he was stepped up to this grade at Sandown, and given the testing ground today, I can’t advise backing him today. I still think he is a promising horse, but I don’t think he will be winning today.
