Our Cono

Saturday 18th January

It’s Saturday again, and the main racing action takes place at Ascot and Haydock today. Unfortunately the heavy rain we have had recently has left the ground very testing at both venues, so you will need a horse that handles the conditions well.

Here are today’s racing selections, good luck!

ASCOT

Soul Emotion (2.25) @ 7/2

Nicky Henderson’s 7 year old improved a lot on his 2nd run of the season LTO at Newbury when he finished 3rd in a competitive Class 2 Handicap Hurdle over 2m 4f on soft ground. There were some progressive horses in that field, and I am hopeful that this gelding can improve again today.

His stable are in top form (35% strike rate over the last 2 weeks), and this gelding has shown he handles today’s testing ground well which is a big bonus today. Today’s trip seems ideal for him as well.

Sam’s Adventure (3.00) @ 11/2

As stated above, you will need a horse that handles the ground conditions well today, and that is definitely the case with this 8 year old. His best form is on heavy ground, and he will have no trouble staying today’s trip either.

Welsh National winning conditional Jack Tudor rides Sam’s Adventure (above) today. His 7lb claim is a real bonus for this horse’s chance today

I respect the claims of Espoir De Guye as he won in impressive style LTO at Ascot, but he has been hiked 14lb in the weights since, which will mean he will need to improve again to take this. Another positive for Sam’s Adventure’s chances today is the booking of promising conditional Jack Tudor to ride, who can claim 7lb here. The Welsh National winning jockey is as good as some professionals in my opinion, so his 7lb claim is a big bonus here on the testing ground.

HAYDOCK

Sam Brown (1.30) @ 5/2

Anthony Honeyball’s 8 year old returned from a 2 year absence to win in impressive style LTO at Lingfield over 2m 7f. The fact that he handles today’s testing ground is a big plus, and he jumped really well on his chasing debut that day too.

There is the obvious “bounce” worry here, but I was impressed with the way he won LTO and I’m happy to back him to repeat the feat again today. He faces some well regarded opponents here, but I like this gelding’s chances today.

Acting Lass (2.40) @ 6/1

This gelding likes a battle and has been running well recently. He is at his best on soft ground, so the conditions today will suit him. The stable’s number 1 jockey Sean Bowen comes here to ride, and that is a sign the stable fancy his chances today.

He stays 3m well, so today’s trip won’t be a problem either and his stable are in good form too. Some of the opposition have a bit to prove in my opinion, and I like this gelding’s chance at a good price.
